Art Colors Life - Tucson Artist, Janie Cohen

Jane G. Cohen

Janie Cohen was born February 20, 1945, in Cleveland, Ohio. Though she has since had formal training as an artist, she started young; for as a child, nothing made Janie happier than a new box of crayons.  She won her first art competition in the 4th grade for the City of Memphis Clean Up, Fix Up, Paint Up annual event.  She sold her first painting, which had won a blue ribbon, in the 7th grade.

Janie continued making art by finding any excuse she could: as historian using illustration for her youth organization; making creative covers for her school reports, and illustrating poetry notebooks for herself, her little sister, and then her son.  If it could be colored, Janie would try it. She made cartoons to illustrate her knowledge of science in graduate school. And she made cartoons for a job assignment.  She even wrote and illustrated a little personal book for her granddaughter.

Janie has always believed that art colors life.
Janie Cohen studied drawing and painting at Memphis College of Art, University of Memphis, University of Arizona (C.E.), Scottsdale Artists School, and Ichiyo Japanese Art Center in Atlanta, Georgia.  Janie holds a B.S. degree in psychology from The University of Memphis.  She holds Chartered Life Underwriter and Charter Financial Consultant designations from The American College.

Janie was a successful insurance consultant by profession and became an award winning artist by avocation. She has painted on a full-time basis for the last 10 years. Her illustrations have appeared in Project Calendar 1995, the 1994 issue of Lifetimes, and Crafts for the Very Disabled and Handicapped, a full-length book in rehabilitation therapy.  She recently illustrated Expressive Arts for the Very Disabled and Handicapped, Second Edition.

Janie also illustrated Inside the Gates, a signed and numbered limited edition of poetry by Constance M. McDonald.  Inside the Gates is available for a limited time at premier galleries and exclusive shops in Denver, Colorado Springs, and mountain resorts of Colorado.

Janie’s paintings have appeared in local, regional, and national juried shows. Her Best of Friends was selected as one of the 12 award winners for the international competition for Project Calendar 1995, which raised proceeds to benefit the Chronic Fatigue and Immune Dysfunction Syndrome Association of America.  Best of Friends also appeared in Memphis, TN, at the 1996 Arts in the Park; and Bible Totin’ Women was exhibited at the TN Center for the Arts in Nashville.

My Country Tis’ of Thee and Purple Mountains Majesty were exhibited at the D’art exhibitions at the Tucson Museum of Art.  Entwined, Hattitude, and Vaquero were displayed and auctioned at the Tucson Museum of Art Crush events in 2008,  2009, and 2010 respectively. Janie’s Renewal of Spirit Series hangs at the Arizona Cancer Center. Look Away Dixieland hangs at The Center for Southern Folklore, a museum in Memphis, TN.

Janie is an Associate Member of Oil Painters of America. She is a member of the Tucson Museum of Art Contemporary Art Society and The  Female Art Club and Education of the University of Arizona (FACE-U of A).
